ColumbiaYou is provided by the Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) and Columbia University (CU) and is designed to enable alumni, staff, students, friends, donors, faculty, and parents of Columbia University students to publish stories (in any format, e.g. text, photography, audio, or video) related to Columbia University and the CAA, such as news, research, events, University pride and fellowship, and University citizenship.

I. Privacy and Security

Columbia University and Columbia Alumni Association (CAA) have not, do not, and will never sell alumni information to anyone. All alumni information is strictly guarded for use by individual alumni and the CAA for personal and University-related purposes only.
Columbia University and Columbia Alumni Association are committed to protecting the privacy and accuracy of your confidential information to the extent possible, subject to provisions of state and federal law. Other than as required by laws that guarantee public access to certain types of information, or in response to subpoenas or other legal instruments that authorize access, personally identifiable information is not actively shared. In particular, we do not redistribute or sell personal information collected on our web servers.

ColumbiaYou may collect personal information such as name, address, email address, telephone number(s), and social media handles to enable sharing of Content to the site. Any User Content that you post on ColumbiaYou may be viewed and shared by other Users, so we ask that you do not post sensitive personal information as part of your User Content.

Columbia Alumni Association may use your personal information for purposes of sending you notifications about new Content on ColumbiaYou, about ColumbiaYou administration, and about additional Columbia University or Columbia Alumni Association programs and opportunities. You may opt out from receiving email communications from us.

Columbia Alumni Association will not disclose, without your consent, personal information collected about you, except (i) to third-party vendors who are obligated to keep this information confidential, and (ii) for certain explicit circumstances in which disclosure is required by law.

Columbia Alumni Association will not distribute or sell personal information to third-party organizations.

Questions regarding users’ rights to review, modify or delete their previously provided personal information or Content should be directed to columbiayou@columbia.edu.

Columbia Alumni Association does not control the content or information practices of external organizations. We recommend you review the privacy statements of these organizations.


II. Policy and Guidelines for Proper Use

To safeguard the operation of ColumbiaYou, the CAA has adopted many guidelines and policies that are used by the University to govern conduct that occurs in an online environment.
In addition to the University’s policies and guidelines, users of ColumbiaYou must abide by the following specific rules and regulations:
A. By submitting, posting or displaying information, data, text, music, sound, photographs, graphics, video, messages or other materials (“User Content”) on or through ColumbiaYou, you grant Columbia Alumni Association permission to reproduce, adapt, distribute and publish such User Content through ColumbiaYou and related Columbia Alumni Association or Columbia University communications channels. Once you remove any User Content from ColumbiaYou, we will discontinue this licensed use within a commercially reasonable period. However, note that once User Content has been shared by other User via their social media outlets, or copied or stored by other Users, we cannot control its use and cannot require its deletion.

B. You agree not to post User Content that: (i) may create a risk of harm, loss, physical or mental injury, emotional distress, death, disability, disfigurement, or physical or mental illness to you, to any other person, or to any animal; (ii) may create a risk of any other loss or damage to any person or property; (iii) may constitute or contribute to a crime or tort; (iv) contains any information or content that is unlawful, harmful, abusive, racially or ethnically offensive, defamatory, infringing, invasive of personal privacy or publicity rights, harassing, humiliating to other people (publicly or otherwise), libelous, threatening, vulgar, obscene, threatening, or otherwise objectionable; (v) contains any information or content that is illegal; (vi) contains any information or content that you do not have a right to make available under any law or under contractual or fiduciary relationships; (vii) contains any information or content that you know is not correct and current; or (viii) contains any fundraising, event, or employment solicitations. You agree, represent, and warrant that you have the right to post your User Content, and the User Content that you post does not and will not violate third-party rights of any kind, including without limitation any intellectual property, rights of publicity, and privacy rights.

C. You agree that we are only acting as a conduit for your online distribution and publication of your User Content. Columbia Alumni Association does not and will not have any obligation to review User Content, and therefore we do not guarantee the accuracy, integrity, or quality of User Content and we cannot assure you that harmful, inaccurate, deceptive, offensive, threatening, defamatory, unlawful, or otherwise objectionable User Content will not appear on ColumbiaYou. You understand and agree that any loss or damage of any kind that occurs as a result of the use of any User Content that you send, upload, download, stream, post, transmit, display, or otherwise make available or access through your use of ColumbiaYou is solely your responsibility. Columbia Alumni Association is not responsible for any public display or misuse of your User Content. We do, however, to the extent permitted by law, reserve the right to review any or all User Content in our sole discretion and reserve the right to reject or remove any User Content, in whole or in part. Under no circumstances will Columbia University or Columbia Alumni Association be liable in any way for any user content posted on or made available through ColumbiaYou. Columbia University or Columbia Alumni Association is not responsible for another’s misuser or misappropriation of any content or information that you post on ColumbiaYou.

III. Liability and Indemnity

The reliability of the information available through ColumbiaYou is largely dependent upon the actions of users. The CAA can make no representations about the accuracy, reliability, completeness, or timeliness of this information.
The CAA does not warrant that the ColumbiaYou web site will operate error-free or that the site and its server are free of computer viruses or other harmful material. To the fullest extent permitted by the law, the CAA disclaims all warranties, including the warranties of merchantability, non-infringement, and fitness for particular purpose. In no event shall the CAA or the University be liable for any damages whatsoever, including, without limitation, incidental, consequential, or punitive damages, resulting from the use of or inability to use information or materials available on the ColumbiaYou web site.
By using ColumbiaYou web site, you agree to indemnify, defend, and hold harmless the CAA, the University, and their respective agents from and against any and all losses, claims, damages, costs, and expenses that may arise from your use of ColumbiaYou web site or your breach of these policies. The CAA will provide notice to you of any such action or claim, and reserves the right to participate, at our expense, in the investigation, settlement, and defense of any such action or claim.
Please note that the CAA may revise these policies and your continued use of the site constitutes your agreement to comply with such modifications. You should review the policies periodically to ensure that you are familiar with them.
Participation in ColumbiaYou is a privilege.
